Ideation
Flâneur describes the experience of being subtly and unintentionally influenced by one's surroundings while moving through them in passing. Flaneur Market explores this condition through color, perspective, and spatial sequencing. The design experiments with shifting between diorama and panorama, skewed horizons, and strategic applications of color to transform the everyday act of grocery shopping into an immersive architectural experience.The project was guided by a set of design rules centered on framing views, disrupting conventional perspectives, and using color playfully yet intentionally. Color is applied through principles of color theory, psychology, and cultural associations common in North America to shape perception and influence movement throughout the building.
Rather than responding to a specific location, Flaneur Market is conceived as a site-adaptive system. It seeks conditions such as reflective surfaces, opportunities for the subtraction or amplification of color, expansive horizons, and dynamic interactions between light and water. These environmental qualities allow the project to adapt to multiple contexts while maintaining its conceptual framework.
Design
The market is organized as a collection of individual "dioramas," each framing a distinct spatial experience. As visitors move through the building, these spaces gradually merge into a continuous panorama, creating a sequence of unexpected visual moments. Angled floor planes, varied furniture heights, and manipulated sightlines further distort perspective, encouraging exploration and slowing the pace of movement. Rather than serving as a quick-stop grocery store, Flaneur Market reimagines shopping as an experience of discovery, where architecture invites visitors to wander, observe, and engage with their surroundings.
The resulting spatial organization uses color, framing, and manipulated perspective to choreograph movement through the market, transforming routine circulation into a curated architectural experience.
